“QUILTBAG CABARET”, a new monthly LGBTQ+ performance space in Hastings
Last Tuesday of the Month -
Basement Bar, White Rock Hotel, Hastings, East Sussex (starting 29
Are you a singer-songwriter, musical act, poet, comedian or other artist in the local LGBTQ+ community? Quiltbag Cabaret is a new open mic night for queer and feminist performers in Hastings, St Leonards and Rother region. Starting March 2022, this new open mic will take place on the last Tuesday of the month at the White Rock Hotel.
Quiltbag Cabaret aims to be something different: an open stage for live entertainment and queer perspectives, a venue for performance artists in the LGBTQ+ community to try out new material before a friendly bunch of people we can relate to. Join us for a night of quintessentially queer, unique and inspirational live performances, from the thought-provoking to the burlesque in an evening of all-round good fun. The inaugural open mic will take place on 29 March from 7:30pm in the basement bar of the White Rock Hotel.
The Quiltbag Cabaret Facebook Group has been set up to bring together those interested in participating. The open mic night is hosted by Atomic Twitten (Taylor and Steph) and singer/performer Carol Prior.
QUILTBAG is an LGBTQ+ acronym representing sexual and gender minorities: Queer/Questioning, Undecided, Intersex, Lesbian, Transgender (inc. non-binary), Bisexual, Asexual/Ally and Gay/Genderqueer.

"QUILTBAG": LGBT Arts Showcase at Hastings Pride 2019
The idea for a Quiltbag Cabaret open mic in Hastings came from my involvement with the Hastings & Rother Rainbow Alliance (HRRA) at Hastings Pride 2019, where we ran the Arts and Cabaret Tent. This saw a programme of performances from LGBT musicians, poets and stand-up comedy, a small art exhibit and an LGBT history display. The final line-up was as follows:

The inaugural Hastings Pride took place in 2017, celebrating the local LGBT community with a parade through Hastings town centre and a full day of festivities at The Oval, Hastings. The theme for Hastings Pride 2019 was "Heroes", marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York, which served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. QUILTBAG, the HRRA Arts Tent at Hastings Pride, set out to celebrate the work and lives of LGBT artists, the unsung heroes who through their work continue to challenge those who deny the community a place in society.
